Tuesday, January 10, 2017 – E Day

  • Attention science fair participants: Last meeting before the fair is today! After school in Mrs. King’s room. Please plan your ride for 3:45 pm prompt in the front of the building.
  • Peer Tutoring IS being held today. If you participate in Peer Tutoring please promptly report to B103 at the beginning of REACH.(TUES/THUR): The DMS Yearbook is on sale now!  Visit the link to Balfour Yearbook on the DMS homepage or Facebook page.
  • Ecology Club returns from the holiday and basketball break on Thursday, after school until 4 PM.  New members are welcome and information on the Cape Cod trip will be available.
  • The 8th grade girls basketball team lost their season finale to Pierce yesterday to end the season 5-7.
    • Coach Gittis and Coach DiVito would like to thank the girls for all their hard work this season and last.  You are a great and classy group of young ladies and we are so proud of you! The 7th grade girls team would also like to send a shout out to thank their big sisters for their support, guidance and friendship throughout this season.  You played a big part in our successful year and made it so much more enjoyable.

Monday, January 9, 2017 – D ay

  • 8th grade girls – it’s still not too late to join Girls Star! Tomorrow is the first meeting and there are permission forms in guidance. See Mrs. Witmer or Mrs. Lyman with questions. What a great way to get some leadership experience working with 10th graders from west!
  • There is a mandatory meeting for all students involved in Ski and Snowboard Club during REACH. Please meet in the gymnasium immediately following 10th We will be reviewing drop off and pick up procedures, expectations, equipment check and storage procedures for the first trip this coming Friday.
  • Any 7th or 8th grade girl interested in playing lacrosse at West in the future, please meet in Mrs. Neff’s room (A200) for a quick 15 minute informational meeting on Friday January 20th during reach from 2:15-2:30! Head Coach Brittney Long will be presenting information on camps, clinics, indoor season opportunities etc. Hope to see you there!
  • Attention First Aid students… If you are going on the Aidan’s Heart field trip to Marsh Creek, please get Mrs. Neff your permission form ASAP!  You will not be allowed on the bus unless your permission form is turned in today!
  • Sports Report: The 8th grade girls’ basketball team won their 5th game of the season Friday 34-3 over North Brandywine.  The team scored 17 points in each half and had balanced scoring and tough defense. The girls’ season ends today with a home game against Pierce.  Come on out and rock the gym!

Thursday, January 5, 2017 – B Day

  • Peer Tutoring is cancelled Thursday, January 5th.
  • 8th grade girls there is still time to join Girls star! The first meeting will be next Tuesday Jan 10 after school please see Mrs. Witmer or Mrs. Lyman for permission form on guidance.
  • Annie Production: Today, and for the rest of the week, we will be rehearsing until 5:00, and EVERYONE should be there!
  • Attention all students: would you like the honor of challenging the teachers in this year’s 20th Students vs. Faculty Basketball game on March 10? Sign up now on the Schoology link for a chance to be selected. We can only take 30 students, 15 from each grade level and you must commit to playing that night. Selections will be made by the end of the month and you have until January 20 to register. 
  • 9 weeks until Coin Wars. Are you saving those pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters? Who is going to challenge King Mclaughlin and Queen Ms. Grimm this year?
  •  A reminder that it is not too late to join the Ecology Club and attend the Cape Cod trip. Deposits are due Tuesday. Don’t miss out. Forms are still available from Mr. Gittis in room A215

  • Starting on Wednesday and for the rest of the week, we will be rehearsing until 5:00, and EVERYONE should be there!
  • Today during reach, we will announce the winners of the door decorating contest, so stay tuned

  • Downingtown West Girls Basketball team, Coaches, and former players are hosting a free clinic at the Downingtown West High School Gym, for all Girls in grades 3rd thru 8th , Friday, December 30th, 2016, from 10:00am-12pm (Registration will start at 9:30am). Cost is FREE! (Donations towards the DHSW Girls B-ball program are appreciated).

• We are now just 75 days from Coin Wars and the Students vs Faculty Basketball game week. Are you saving those coins? This will be our 20th year and we really want to go big. Please help.

• Sign-ups for students to apply to play in the game will take place In mid-January through Schoology. Stay tuned. We will be looking for 15 dedicated students from each grade level, girls and boys and hope you will all save the March 10 date for what promises, as always to be a fun and special evening.

• Our charities this year are the JDRF, Moyer Foundation and our sister school in Honduras, the Good Shepard Children’s Home which cares for and educates over 100 orphans.

• So save the date, save your coins and lets show the world what Kids Helping Kids can do

Tuesday, December 20, 2016 – B Day

• The Ecology Club is planning a trip to Cape Cod, May 19-21. Would you like to go? See Mr. Gittis in Room A215 for a membership form and trip introductory letter. This is the only overnight field trip from DMS this year and it is a great one. 24 years of going to Cape Cod says it all. Don’t miss out. See Mr. Gittis this week.

• The 8th grade girls basketball team played a very solid 4 quarters and came away with a 29-17 win over Chichester yesterday. Chichester scored the first basket of the game, then our girls took over defensively and never looked back to even their record at 4-4. We play at Stetson tomorrow before taking the holiday break.

• And finally, Yesterday afternoon the Academic Competition Team held their annual Geography Bee in what turned out to be one of the best ever held at DMS. Thirteen seventh and eighth graders pitted their geographical knowledge against one another through a three round melee. While all thirteen participants fared well, after two hours, only one remained. Congratulations to this year’s champion, Sid Sharma!

 

Tuesday, December 13, 2016 – D Day

House Council is collecting new toys for the local Head Start Program. Students who would like to make the holiday “merry and bright” for a child in our community should bring in a new, wrapped toy for a preschool age child by Friday, December 16th. • The holidays are coming up and it’s time to spread some cheer! Send a holiday wish and buy a candy cane for a friend in the cafeteria during lunches this week. There will be NJHS members selling them at the table right by the door. Each candy cane is $1 and all proceeds will benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand. All candy canes will be delivered on December 20th and 21st. Happy Holidays!

• Peer Tutoring is cancelled today (Tuesday). Peer tutoring will resume with the normal schedule this Thursday at REACH.

  • Stryker Corporation will be here today for their second STEM Workshop entitled Cranium Facial Reconstruction – room B101 from 1:30 to 2:30. Bring your name tags!! 
  • The 8th grade girls basketball team traveled to Kennett Friday and came back with a hard fought 22-16 win. The girls have been playing outstanding defense all year and held Kennett to only 5 points before the 4th quarter. A pair of late 3’s made the score closer then the game really was, but the girls were rewarded for an outstanding effort.
